Princess Lashes

February 18, 2010

I’ve never been a big fan of Jordan. I will admit that my perceptions of her did change whilst with Peter Andre but after the breakup my negative impressions were confirmed. My housemate and dear friend Jenna Rattue finds her fascinating and enjoys both her books and television shows (each to their own) however, not wanting to leave the living room and retreat back to my cave, I decided to accompany her in watching What Katie Did Next (on ITV 2 Thursdays at 9.00pm if you’re interested).  I watched in awe as Katie manipulates the paps, I wouldn’t consider her a business woman but credit where credits due in her ability to remain in the press, especially after her negative experience in the jungle (I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here). As I continued watching I noticed that spent more time on the phone to her kids (Harvey, Junior and Princess). I understand that this is a programme about her as a “career woman” rather than a show purely about her family life and that selected clips are used and this is not an accurate representation of her life but nevertheless, I still found it quite shocking and sad.

Anyway, I’ll get to the point. The most shocking and horrifying part of the episode was when little Princess posed wearing Katie’s false eyelashes and lip gloss, which was encouraged by Katie as she proudly says to her two-year old daughter ”You’re a mini me!”. I found it to be irresponsible. Sure, I agree it’s fun for children to play around with make-up such as blusher and lipstick but for me the false eyelashes crossed a line promoting value to things that are inappropriate for a child. Not to mention the comparison of Jordan, a woman marketed as a sexualised object to an innocent child.

Review of Jimmy Carr

February 15, 2010

Rapier Wit

A few weeks back, my wonderful boyfriend bought me tickets to see Jimmy Carr in the Oasis in Swindon. I’ve always quite enjoyed his comedy, from the panel shows, most notably 8 of 10 cats, to the outrageous game show distraction. I had low expectations I wont lie, as much as he used to make me laugh, more recently I find his jokes to be  predictable and in bad taste but i wasn’t disappointed. We arrived  early and our seats were literally spitting distance from Carr which was exciting to begin with but once the show had begun I could feel my face heating up and my heart fluttering praying that he didn’t pick on me for the butt of one of his popular and well-loved cruel jokes. Luckily, I wasn’t the target, others had offered themselves up for the role, one girl at the back in regular intervals kept shouting out various  slurs (I presume it was her birthday or a hen party or something, anyway, she was annoying) but Carr wasn’t deterred and just playfully joked with her about throwing her out (unfortunately, nearer the end of the show, we all felt like this was a good idea and the crowd started shouting at her to shut up.. or words to that effect).  Disappointingly, there was no opening support act, however the crowds were worked up with an interactive video that Carr had written prior to the show, it was an entertaining introduction but for me, it wasnt a brilliant replacement.

Having enjoyed Carr’s stand up dvds, I had expected snappy comebacks, quick wit, dark comedy and blunt delivery and all these character traits were packed in to the show. His routine, in my eyes, was genius, a mix of childish insults, crude and inappropriate jokes delivered by an emotionless charming middle class man, that leave the audience wondering whether it’s actually ok for them to laugh. At various points in the show Carr invited audience participation the audience heckles and Carr’s responses were unique and hilarious.

Carr reminded the audience continuously throughout the show that afterwards he would be staying behind for signing, I wasn’t expecting to meet Carr after the show. I thought the queue would wrap around the venue and that I wouldn’t get a look-in. However, after the show, my boyfriend and I had a 15 minute wait and were able to get our programme, poster and ticket stubs signed. I was a bumbling mess but my boyfriend actually shook his hand! He was an incredibly friendly and happy man and the show was thoroughly enjoyable.

Top-notch!
